Cuisine: Asian-American

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 lb ground chicken
  • 1 small onion finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp sriracha optional, for heat
  • 1 8 oz can water chestnuts drained and finely chopped
  • 1 head butter lettuce leaves separated
  • 1/4 cup roasted peanuts chopped, for garnish

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Spatula
  • Knife and cutting board

Method

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground chicken and cook, breaking it apart with a spatula, until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the onion is translucent and the garlic is fragrant, about 3 minutes. Trust me, this step adds a depth of flavor that's essential for that restaurant-quality taste.
  3. Stir in soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and sriracha (if using). Cook for another 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  4. Mix in the chopped water chestnuts and green onions. Cook for an additional 2 minutes, ensuring everything is well combined. Now comes the fun part—watching the flavors come together!
  5. Spoon the chicken mixture into the center of each lettuce leaf. Garnish with chopped peanuts, then serve immediately. Step back and admire your delicious creation before digging in!

Notes

Chef's Tips:
• For a vegetarian version, substitute ground chicken with crumbled tofu or a plant-based meat alternative.
• Avoid overcooking the chicken to keep it juicy and flavorful.
• Serve with additional hoisin sauce on the side for extra flavor.
Food Safety:
• Ensure chicken is cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F to prevent foodborne illness.
• Store leftovers in the refrigerator within two hours of cooking.
