Ingredients

  • 2 pounds russet potatoes peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese divided
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter melted
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme chopped

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Aluminum foil
  • Sharp knife or mandoline for slicing potatoes

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the heavy cream, milk, half of the cheddar cheese, Parmesan cheese, melted butter, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and fresh thyme. Mix until well combined.
  3. Layer the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish, overlapping them slightly. Pour the cream mixture over the potatoes, ensuring they are evenly coated.
  4. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil, sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese on top, and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
  5. Let the potatoes rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with additional fresh thyme if desired.

Notes

Chef's Tips:
• For a creamier texture, use Yukon Gold potatoes instead of russet
• Avoid overcooking to prevent the potatoes from becoming mushy
• Serve as a side with roasted meats or grilled vegetables for a complete meal
Food Safety:
• Ensure potatoes are cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) for food safety
• Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days
